8 Reasons to Start Meditating

Meditation was a secret to much of theWestern world for thousands of years. Fora long time, it was something only monks and other devout religiouspractitioners did. Today, it'severywhere. Meditation has many morebenefits than I've listed here, but these are some core reasons why it isbeneficial and why it's recommended for everyone. That's the thing about meditation; it's nevera bad idea. Meditating once a day has nonegative consequences, assuming you don't do it while driving or at a workconference. After a while, you'll feelsharper, refreshed, and more mindful of your thoughts and actions. Simply put, meditation allows you to knowyourself better.

Stillness

Things move quicker and more intensely atthis point in history than ever before. Thereare tons of distractions like TV and the internet to make sure we have constantstimulation. It's rare that our mindsever get a rest. If you feeloverwhelmed, as many of us so often do, meditation will help. It will probably be difficult at first;sitting in silence sounds less enticing than eating a tasty snack or watching asitcom. But once you start meditating,you'll come to appreciate stillness and tranquility. If you practice meditation for a long time,you'll find you can retain your stillness even when the world around you isharsh and chaotic. There's a reason whymeditation coaches have been so popular among companies with generally high-stress employees, likeinvestment banks and law firms-- meditation helps keep people grounded. Your surroundings may be crazy, but over timemeditation allows you to feel secure and at peace internally, in basically anysituation.

Focus

Recent studies show that meditating just 5minutes a day improves focus. That'spretty impressive. 5 minutes is lessthan .5 percent of your day. You'll findthat the time you spend meditating is anything but wasted, since the benefitsaffect you 24/7. Improved focus makes usbetter at our jobs, our studies and more engaged as conversationalists. Meditation promotes productivity overdistractions, and the focus is results in is not stressed-out focused, butdiligent, calm focus. That's a prettyhuge benefit.

Decision-making

This ties into the previous two, but I recallone time I was a little kid and couldn't make a decision, and my teacher toldme to stop and count to ten, and then try again. Meditation in the morning is like stoppingand counting to ten, but sometimes it lasts for the whole day. The clarity of mind that develops over timewill undoubtedly improve your decision-making skills.

Non-attachment

When you first learn meditation, thebreath is the most important part of your practice. Breathing is your anchor, meaning it servesas a support you can count on when distracting thoughts pop into your headwhile you're sitting. When a thoughtcomes up, just go back to the breath. Distraction? Back to the breath. Focusing on the breath is subconscioustraining for non-attachment, which is a hugely important part of Buddhism, andalso of happiness. When we attachourselves to thoughts, people, things, etc, we stake our happiness on thepossession of them. Meditation teachesus to let go of thoughts; this translates into action in our daily lives, andonce you meditate for a while, you'll find yourself less attached to outcomesand possessions.

Posture

Sitting in Zen meditation promotes uprightposture, which not only improves the way you feel physically but also helpswith self-confidence and body image. Zenaims not to concern itself with appearances, especially physical appearances, butchances are, if you're feeling better, you're looking better too.

Brain power

Not only have studies revealed meditation'sbenefits on focus; brain power might improve, too. People who meditate frequently tend to have athicker cortex in certain parts of their brain. Granted, according to that article, these are people who meditate 20minutes twice a day, but you can always start small and work your way up to aregimented long-term meditation schedule. Like anything, it just takes practice.

Creativity

The most interesting example here that I'maware of is legendary film director David Lynch's wonderful book, Catching theBig Fish: Meditation, Consciousness andCreativity. In it, Lynch discusses howhis meditation has influenced his filmmaking style and artisticphilosophy. In clearing the mind andreaching into the subconscious, we can come up with new ideas that could havebeen left undiscovered without the aid of meditation. Doesn't matter if you're a painter, writer,or businessperson-- new ideas and a new perspective can aid you in anything youdo. I'm currently reading Steve Jobs'biography, and it's cool to see how many of the ideas he had for designs andbusiness models came from his Zen meditation and Eastern-inspired personalphilosophy of minimalism.

Discipline

Lastly-- and maybe most importantly-- is abenefit of meditation that ties into every other benefit. When you consciously commit to do somethingfor a specific amount of time every day (like meditate twice a day for 10minutes) you're training yourself to have self-discipline. This attitude will ideally carry over intoother aspects in your life, like work, study and personal problem-solving. Since I've started meditating, I find I havemore patience and get less frustrated with issues, both personally andprofessionally. I have a newfoundself-discipline that allows me to set deadlines for myself and work thingsout. I truly think that if you givemeditation a try, you'll find you achieve similar benefits.

O Golfinho, a Carpa e o Tubarão

Existem três tipos de animais no mar, com diferentes modosde proceder: as carpas, os tubarões e os golfinhos.

A carpa é dócil, passiva e quando agredida não se afasta nemresponde. Ela não luta mesmo quando provocada. Considera-se uma vítima,conformada com o seu destino. Se alguém tem que se sacrificar, a carpasacrifica-se. Ela sacrifica-se porque acredita que há escassez. Neste caso,para parar de sofrer ela sacrifica-se.

Carpas são aquelas pessoas que na vida sempre cedem, são osque recuam; em crises, sacrificam-se por não poderem ver outros asacrificarem-se. Jogam o perde-ganha, perdem para que o outro possa ganhar.

Declaração que a carpa faz para si mesma: "Sou umacarpa e acredito na escassez. Em virtude desta crença, não espero jamais fazerou ter o suficiente. Assim, se não posso escapar da aprendizagem e daresponsabilidade permanecendo longe deles, eu sacrifico-me."

Neste mar existe outro tipo de animal: o tubarão. O tubarãoé agressivo por natureza, agride mesmo quando não provocado. Ele também crê quevai faltar. Ele acredita que, já que vai faltar, que falte para outro, não paraele! O tubarão passa o tempo todo a procurar vítimas para devorar porque eleacredita que podem faltar vítimas. Que vítimas são as preferidas dos tubarões?Acertou: as carpas!…

Tanto o tubarão como a carpa acabam viciados nos seussistemas. Costumam agir de forma automática e irresistível. Os tubarões jogam oganha-perde, eles tem que ganhar sempre, não se importando que o outro perca.

Declaração que o tubarão faz para si mesmo: "Sou umtubarão e acredito na escassez. Em razão desta crença, procuro obter o máximoque posso, sem nenhuma consideração pelos outros".

Neste mar que é a vida, há um terceiro tipo de animal: ogolfinho. Os golfinhos são dóceis por natureza. Mas quando atacados respondem ese um grupo de golfinhos encontra uma carpa a ser atacada eles defendem a carpae atacam os agressores.

O comportamento dos golfinhos em volta dos tubarões élendário e, provavelmente, eles fizeram por merecer essa fama. Usando aastúcia, eles podem ser mortais para os tubarões. Matá-los com mordidas? Oh,não! Os golfinhos nadam à roda e martelam, nadam e martelam. Usando os seusfocinhos bulbosos como clavas, eles esmagam metodicamente a "caixatorácica" do tubarão até que a mortal criatura deslize impotente para ofundo.

Mais do que pela perícia no combate ao tubarão, escolhi ogolfinho para simbolizar as nossas ideias sobre como tomar decisões e comolidar com épocas de rápidas mudanças devido às habilidades naturais destemamífero para pensar construtiva e criativamente. Quando não conseguem o quequerem, eles alteram o comportamento com precisão e rapidez, algumas vezes deforma engenhosa, para buscar aquilo que desejam. Golfinhos procuram sempre oequilíbrio, jogam o ganha-ganha, procuram sempre encontrar soluções que atendamas necessidades de todos.

Declaração que o golfinho faz para si mesmo: "Sou umgolfinho e acredito na escassez e na abundância potenciais. Mas podemosaprender a tirar o melhor proveito da força e utilizar os recursos de um modoelegante. A group ofgraduates, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their olduniversity professor.

Conversationsoon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Offeringhis guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a largepot of coffee and an assortment of cups – porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal,some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite – telling them to helpthemselves to the coffee.

When allthe students had a cup of coffee, the professor said: “If you noticed, all thenice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the simple and cheapones.

While it is normal for you to want only the best foryourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.

"Iknew a woman who only complained about her husband whenever she came to see me.She complained about his gambling, his drinking, his laziness, his every actionin fact - complaining, endlessly complaining was all she knew. In her husbandwere contained all the vices, while she worked hard to keep the house in orderand to look after him. And certainly, she was very overworked, because therewas also a crippled daughter who was bed-ridden and needed assistance even justto eat her meals. With so many burdens imposed upon herself, this woman wastruly living the life of a martyr.

Whenevershe came to see me she would come out with the same string of complaintsagainst her husband, but when I looked deep into her eyes, it was obvious thatshe derived some joy from the whole situation. What was clear was that herhusband's drinking and gambling habits gave her ego immense satisfaction -because by comparison with her worthless husband, she had become a pricelessdiamond!

We live bycomparisons. If the husband is the greatest, then his wife has to be ordinary.But in this case the woman was the shining star, and through her husband'sdissipated way of life she found admiration and sympathy for herself throughoutthe town. Of course, she maintained to one and all that she was deeplydistressed and unhappy, but actually the last thing she would want would be tofind herself free of the situation in which she lived; because getting rid ofthe situation would also mean getting rid of all the praise and glory in whichshe reveled. The crippled girl too was only an instrument with which she couldenhance her air of martyrdom - "Just see how I tend her, comforting her inher sickness and meeting her every need!"

People lovesuffering because it gives them the opportunity to become martyrs. This ladywas not really complaining, she was advertising her virtues. Eventually, thepoor crippled girl died. With her death half the woman's sorrows should havedisappeared. In fact she should have found much happiness in the girl's freedomfrom a life of suffering, and her own freedom from the cares and anxieties oflooking after her. And when her husband finally ran away, this should havebrought an end to all her remaining unhappiness. She often used to say to me hewere to die, or leave forever, it would be a blessing. I don't want to have tosee him!"

But when hedid run off, never to return, her distress was even greater All the colordrained from her face, and a deep melancholy settled over her life, as thoughher whole interest in life had disappeared - which it had: her drinking andgambling husband provided the essence of her life. In her condemnation of hishabits lay all the meaning, the purpose, the promise in her life. Now, with himgone, all that sustained her was gone. She was reduced to the stature of anordinary woman.

Now nobodysings her praises, nobody proclaims her long-suffering virtues. When I saw herlast it was apparent that she would soon die, because the mechanism that kepther going is no longer there Just consider a little how, whenever you talkabout your unhappinesses, you are playing the martyr behind your words. See howyou find happiness in your so-called distress.

Man is sucha clever decorator! He decorates even his sorrows, converting them intoornaments with his cunning workmanship. And then arises a new difficulty forhim; how to cast off the decoration and ornamentation he has created. Had younot decorated your misery, you would have been able to cast it away long ago -you would have walked out of your prison. But through your own devices you havemistaken your prison for your home. Only you are holding yourself in chains,but you have taken the chains for ornaments.

The day youhave enough of your unhappiness and your interest in it drops, only then thechange can happen in your life. And until you are interested in it, who am I tostop you from it? As long as you are interested in it, remain in yourunhappiness. Nothing can happen out of hurrying; the fruit will only fall whenit is ripe, and it is foolish to pick unripe fruit." ~ Osho

Once Buddha was walking from one town to another town with a few of his followers. While they were traveling, they happened to pass a lake.

They stopped there and Buddha told one of his disciples, "I am thirsty. Do get me some water from that lake there. “

The disciple walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy, very turbid.

The disciple thought, "How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink!"

So he came back and told Buddha,

"The water in there is very muddy. I don't think it is fit to drink."

After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The disciple obediently went back to the lake.

This time too he found that the lake was muddy.

He returned and informed Buddha about the same.

After sometime, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back.

The disciple reached the lake to find the lake absolutely clean and clear with pure water in it.

The mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had.

So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.

Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said, “See what you did to make the water clean.

You let it be....

and the mud settled down on its own – and you got clear water.

Your mind is also like that!

When it is disturbed, just let it be.

Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own.

You don't have to put in any effort to calm it down.

It will happen. It is effortless.

Judy: "My own love." Two days later - twenty-five degrees. Warm.

Judy: "Dearie." Three days later - fifteen degrees. Tepid.

Judy: "Dear." Four days later - five degrees. Cool.

Judy: "James." Five days later - zero degrees. Very cool.

Judy: "Sir!" Six days later - below freezing. Icy.

On the seventh day - minus twenty degrees! Very cold.
Jimmy: "GET LOST!" - Pow!
Judy: "FUCK YOU!" - Crash! Two days after the storm - meltdown.

A man walks out to the street and catches a taxi just
going by. He gets into the taxi, and the cabbie says,

"Perfect timing. You're just like Frank.

Passenger: 'Who?'

Cabbie: "Frank Feldman. He's a guy who did everything
right all the time. Like my coming along when you
needed a cab, things happened like that to Frank
Feldman every single time."

Passenger: "There are always a few clouds over
everybody."

Cabbie: "Not Frank Feldman He was a terrific athlete.
He could have won the Grand-Slam at tennis. He could
golf with the pros. He sang like an opera baritone and
danced like a Broadway star and you should have heard
him play the piano. He was an amazing guy."

Passenger: "Sounds like he was something really
special."

Cabbie: "There's more... He had a memory like a computer.
He remembered everybody's birthday. He knew all about
wine, which foods to order and which fork to eat them
with. He could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse,
and the whole street blacks out. But Frank Feldman, he
could do everything right."

Passenger: "Wow, some guy then."

Cabbie: "He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic
and avoid traffic jams. Not like me, I always seem to get
stuck in them. But Frank, he never made a mistake, and
he really knew how to treat a woman and make her feel
good. He would never answer her back even if she was
in the wrong; and his clothing was always immaculate,
shoes highly polished too. He was the perfect man! He
never made a mistake. No one could ever measure up to
Frank Feldman."

Passenger: "An amazing fellow. How did you meet him?"

Cabbie: "Well, I never actually met Frank. He died. . . .
I'm married to his widow."
